Cosmic Botanica makes music for the space between deep listening and movement. Formed in Los Angeles in 2010, the project began with a group of like-minded friends and musicians gathering for impromptu jam sessions. Over time, those open-ended sessions became a shared creative language, turning improvised grooves into composed songs while preserving the instinct and conversation of the original jams.
The sound moves through jazz, acid jazz, hip-hop, reggae dub, Latin funk, and breakbeat rhythms. Its influences reach from the psychedelic funk of Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic to the exploratory jazz of Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul. The band also draws from the dub innovations of Lee "Scratch" Perry and the sample-driven atmosphere of Nightmare on Wax and Thievery Corporation.
Cosmic Botanica operates as a musical collective rather than a collection of individual personalities. Its flexible live configuration brings together bass, keyboards, Moog, flute, drums, vocals, and an expandable wind section. Vocals and lyrical collaborations appear throughout the recorded catalog, while the live experience remains primarily instrumental, leaving room for groove, electronic textures, melodic conversation, and improvisation.
Recent releases "Supernova Love" and "Get It Hot" mark the latest stage of the collective's evolution. Together, the songs connect its instrumental foundation with vocals, atmospheric textures, tropical rhythm, Latin flavor, and late-night energy while preserving the improvisational spirit at the center of the music.
The band's Los Angeles history includes a 2018 residency at Bon Vivant in Atwater Village and a 2026 residency at The Escondite in Downtown Los Angeles. Now focused on new music, festivals, and future touring, Cosmic Botanica continues to build an experience that can be absorbed, explored, or danced to.
